I have contact with Mr. Vignelli, and if there is enough interest, I could probably pass the idea along to him when we chat. What do you guys think?

Can you clarify this statement for someone who doesn’t live in NY and has never seen those signs?

If I recall correctly NY Transit got in touch with Unimark (Vignelli’s studio) for a unification of all the signage in the subway, but they couldn’t afford a full consultation project, so Unimark just delivered signage examples and NY Transit’s shop would produce and deliver them.

Vignelli’s mocks had a line at the top to mark where the metal holding bar meets the signage, and the signage shop at NY Transit interpreted it as a graphical element. This picture makes it clear:
