Why are we trying to save Casa Loma when we could just tear it down?

Yeah that’s the stupidest question I’ve ever, ever heard. This article makes me insanely upset, if they tear down Casa Loma and build condos, I’m moving out of Toronto. I will have lost all faith in this city.
Everyone is so obsessed with what’s new and what’s “right now” that no one cares about history, architecture, real culture and things that are truly awesome (in the literal awe-inspiring sense). Toronto houses some of my favourite places. The Ontario Science Center, Casa Loma, The ROM, the Don River Valley, The Bluffs (technically Scarborough), Union Station (Yes, two of those are not buildings :P). They are some of the things that make Toronto exactly that, Toronto. What would happen if we tore down Casa Loma and put in a condo? What would happen if we tore down the ROM and put in mall?
Why do fewer and fewer people appreciate things of historic value. Yes, the past is the past, but reflection on the past can build a better future. If we wipe away all the things that have built with the city, that’s not growth and evolution, that is erasure and moving on. Why move on from the things that made our city so great?
This is shitty journalism at its best. If you read the article carefully, nobody (except the journalist) is suggesting tearing down Casa Loma would be a good idea.
It makes as much sense as suggesting that Central Park in NY should be converted into a residential complex, or that Louvre should be converted into a mall. Casa Loma is one of the few truly remarkable landmarks of Toronto.
i don’t think it’s shitty journalism. i think the article was written in a sarcastic tone to highlight Toronto’s neglect for the heritage and history of the city. i don’t think the author was truly advocating the demolition of Casa Lama, he was just playing devil’s advocate.
Upon re-reading you’re right, it’s sarcasm. Now it’s when I pull out my foreign card and get a free pass, heh.
