another option for me would be to stay at a hostel. is there a way a person could come up with a paying plan with the owner if you stay at a hostel for a longer period?

I’d recommend worrying about getting a good hostel first and an apartment second. I’ve switched countries a couple of times and it’s next to impossible securing an apartment without meeting the landlord first–in any country.

Just imagine it from the landlord side: this guy from the US says he wants to rent my apartment, how can I make sure he’s going to show up? I’ll have to ask for the deposit. On your side: how do I make sure this landlord is legit?
