I know you probably don’t care, but it is actually a very hard thing to time. We have to check in, and when people are in a restaurant they are either eating or talking. So your choices are to interrupt a conversation or to ask someone with their mouth full, which are both awkward. Add to that the fact that we are usually busy, and can’t just sit around until you are ready for us to ask how your food is, and you get a whole lot of “i don’t give a fuck, just give me money” from my end.

The thing that sucks is that unless the person isn’t eating at all, you know they don’t really have a complaint, and if they need something they’ll ask, but they still don’t tip as well if you just leave them alone.

I understand, but I’ve lived in a couple of countries and the only place where this happens is Canada (I’m guessing the US too). I find Canadian service overbearing, I’d just prefer them to drop off my food and let me enjoy it.

I also understand there’s no way around it, patrons demand top notch service and it’s pretty evident when you read online reviews, it’s almost always about the service, not the food!

Yeah. I mean, trust me I would love to leave you (read all customers ) alone, but in my experience people tip better when checked up on. It sucks for the people who don’t want to be bothered, but you can always just give your server a thumbs up or nod or something. Or be horribly rude, and make them aware they shouldn’t talk to you… as long as you tip well.

Actually, I prefer the Spanish way: tips are never expected, and the waiter tries to dispatch you as fast and efficiently as possible so he is not the one bothered.
