For those of reddit who are socially awkward: How to be socially graceful
r/offbeatu/Backstop:
For conversation: I found it very helpful to watch talk shows. Not things like Nancy Grace or Jerry Springer, but Letterman or something like “That Metal Show” where the host and guest are interacting like civilized people.
But instead of watching the guest, watch the host. A good host will pick up some little detail of the guest’s story and expand on it. Or just nod and say something that will encourage more of the story.
You can be the host. You can get someone else to talk, and you just herd the conversation along. People love to talk about their experiences and tell stories. Then after you’re comfortable you can fill in with a similar story of your own, or talk about how you’d like to do that or read something about that.
This is great advice, I’ll surely try it!
