Should I look into PHP? What are the best web standard practices? I guess I find myself at a crossroads between knowing and actually knowing what I’m doing.

If you want to pursue a web design career I’d recommend tackling a couple of personal web projects for the summer. Open up a blog and make a website about whatever passion you have. Right now your portfolio is very graphic design oriented and you want to add some web projects.

The “basics” of web design are often not enough, there is real depth into good front-end skills. Taking a look at your code it is obvious you used Dreamweaver and sliced images to achieve hover effects, which is not bad for a graphic design portfolio but for a web designer it’s a bit of a faux pas.

A good idea would be to delve a bit more into front-end stuff (javascript, css and html) and forget about PHP for the time being. Good designers with front-end skills are in demand, nobody will expect you to know PHP though it does provide a nice bonus.
